Malcolm Duffin is a Salford artist and printmaker. In 2021 his work Act On was awarded first prize in the international printmaking exhibition Hommage à Trois. In 2022 two of his prints were selected for entry into the permanent collection of the National Library of Catalonia, Barcelona. He regularly exhibits in the UK and internationally.

His highly expressive and gestural works combine traditional printmaking techniques with motion-based performance art. Using an adapted cinema usherette tray, he works with formal tools, ball bearings and found materials to make real-time ‘kinetic etchings’ of journeys across Manchester and beyond. Marks on the plates are made fast, expressively, and in the moment, responding to the movement of walking, climbing, sitting. All excursions are very different - a walk in the park, climbing stairs, a train journey, shopping, a trip to the beach. These field recordings are then transformed into both individual ‘source material’ etchings and scaled up into larger multi-layered screen prints - such as Wood For The Trees.

The result is printmaking that escapes the confines of the restricted space of the studio. Instead, it engages in a fluid, real-time encounter with both the immediate and external and their impression upon the senses and the self.  They both record and celebrate the glitches, transformations, and accidental, unplanned encounters of our lives.
